How this calculator works

Net worth is the simplest honest measure of financial position: everything you own (assets) minus everything you owe (liabilities). Income tells you how fast water flows into the tub; net worth tells you how much is actually in it.

Getting the inputs right

  • Use market values — what your home or car would realistically sell for today, not what you paid.
  • Count the balance, not the payment — for debts, enter the full remaining balance.
  • A homeowner's pair — home value goes in assets, the remaining mortgage in liabilities; the difference is your equity, and it's captured automatically.
  • Skip small stuff — furniture and electronics rarely change the picture. Round numbers are fine.

Reading your number

A negative net worth is common early in adult life — student loans against a young career can outweigh early savings. That's a starting point, not a verdict. What matters is the trend: recalculate quarterly, and watch whether the number moves up as debts fall and savings grow. Most people find that watching the trend changes behavior more than any budget ever did.

Moving it upward

Every dollar of debt paid off and every dollar saved raises net worth by exactly one dollar — the Debt Payoff and Compound Interest calculators show how fast each side of the ledger can move.
